Understanding the Condition

What is ptosis? +

Ptosis (pronounced "TOE-sis"), also called blepharoptosis, is the drooping of one or both upper eyelids below their normal resting position. It can partially or completely block vision depending on severity. Ptosis may be present from birth (congenital) or develop later in life due to muscle weakening, nerve damage, injury or surgery.

Is ptosis serious? +

Ptosis ranges from mild (barely noticeable) to severe (blocking the pupil). In children, significant ptosis can affect vision development, so an early eye care assessment is important. In adults, sudden-onset drooping — especially with double vision or facial weakness — is worth getting checked promptly. Stable, ongoing ptosis in adults is generally not dangerous but can affect comfort, vision and daily confidence.

What causes ptosis? +

The most common causes include: age-related weakening of the eyelid's lifting mechanism, ptosis present from birth, changes following eye procedures such as cataract surgery, certain health conditions affecting the nerves or muscles around the eye, and occasionally physical weight on the eyelid such as a growth or cyst.

Can ptosis get worse over time? +

Age-related ptosis — the most common type — tends to progress slowly over years. Ptosis linked to certain health conditions may fluctuate. Whether ptosis changes over time depends largely on its cause, which is one reason an eye care professional's assessment is useful.

How the Glasses Work

What are ptosis crutch glasses? +

Ptosis crutch glasses are specialised spectacles fitted with a small support arm — the "crutch" — on the inside of the frame. When worn, this arm sits beneath the upper eyelid and gently lifts it to a normal open position, improving the wearer's field of vision. ARTView frames integrate this crutch directly into the frame design.

Can ptosis glasses help with drooping eyelids? +

Ptosis crutch glasses assist in keeping the eyelid open while worn — the eyelid returns to its natural position when the glasses are removed. They do not address the underlying cause of ptosis. They are a non-surgical daily support aid, useful for many people with mild to moderate drooping. If you are considering other approaches, we recommend discussing these with your eye care professional.

How is the crutch adjusted? +

The ARTView crutch is made from a soft, bendable wire (or nylon in kids frames) that can be gently shaped to position it correctly beneath your eyelid. We provide guidance on adjustment with every order. Because everyone's ptosis degree is different, fine-tuning may be needed when you first receive your glasses. Our team is available on WhatsApp to assist.

Are ptosis glasses comfortable to wear all day? +

Most users adapt to ptosis crutch glasses within a few days. The crutch is designed to sit gently beneath the eyelid without causing discomfort. Proper adjustment is important — if the crutch is pressing too firmly, it needs to be slightly reshaped. WhatsApp us if you experience any discomfort after receiving your glasses.

Do ptosis glasses look different from regular glasses? +

From the outside, ARTView ptosis glasses look identical to regular spectacle frames. The crutch mechanism is on the inside of the lens/frame and is not visible to others. The ARTView range includes stylish square and rectangle frames in various colours — designed so that managing ptosis doesn't compromise your appearance.

Power & Prescription Options

Can I get ptosis glasses with my prescription? +

Yes. All ARTView ptosis frames can be fitted with prescription lenses — single vision (myopia/hyperopia), bifocal or progressive. Simply share your current prescription via WhatsApp and our optical lab will fit the correct lenses into your chosen frame.

What information do you need from my prescription? +

We need: Sphere (SPH), Cylinder (CYL), Axis for each eye, Add (ADD) power if you need bifocal or progressive lenses, and your Pupillary Distance (PD). A photo of your prescription card is the easiest way to share this — send it directly on WhatsApp.

Can I get progressive lenses in ptosis glasses? +

Yes — progressive (no-line multifocal) lenses are available in most ARTView full frame ptosis styles. Progressive lenses in ptosis glasses require careful fitting to ensure the reading zone is positioned correctly. Please discuss this with us on WhatsApp before ordering.

What if I don't have a current prescription? +

If your prescription is outdated or you don't have one, we recommend getting an eye test from a local optometrist first. For ptosis glasses without power (plain lens), you can order without a prescription.

Questions from Parents

Are these glasses safe for children? +

Our dedicated kids ptosis range uses a soft nylon crutch — not a wire — making it safe for children. The frames are sized for children's facial proportions. Adult ARTView frames with metal wire crutches are not recommended for young children.

My child's doctor recommends surgery. Should I use glasses instead? +

Always follow your child's eye care professional's advice — they know your child's specific situation. Ptosis glasses may be worth exploring for older children with milder drooping, or as a practical option while longer-term decisions are being considered. For younger children with more significant drooping, an eye care professional's guidance takes priority. We are happy to discuss our kids range on WhatsApp if it would help.
